4 Things To Do Immediately After Closing On A Home
Posted on: 1 December 2016
Buying a house can be very exciting, but the process can also be long and frustrating. When closing day comes, you sign the final documents, and you receive the keys, you are sure to be ready to start your life in your new home. But before you celebrate, there are several things that you need to get done. After purchasing a house, don't forget to immediately do the following:
Make Copies of All Closing Documents
Signing dozens of pieces of paper at closing may seem monotonous, but the documents that you receive are very valuable. Closing documents should be filed with the county recorder, but if there are any errors made, you may need to present your closing documents to have the error corrected. Having an extra copy of the documents is a safety-net -- put the original copies in a safe deposit box, and keep the copies in a fire-proof lock box in your new home.
Hire a Locksmith
If you want to feel completely safe and secure in the house you just purchased, contact a locksmith the day you move in. If someone previously owned your home, you have no way of knowing who may have a copy of the keys or ever had access to the key. New build homes can also have their keys pass through a lot of hands. A reputable locksmith can either change the locks on all of your exterior doors or re-key them; whichever you choose, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you possess the only set of keys. If your community has locked mailboxes, don't forget to get your mailbox lock changed or rekeyed as well. A company like Becker Locksmith Services can be a great help.
Have Carpeting or Tile Professionally Cleaned
Once you move all of your furniture and belongings into a home, it can be much more difficult to hire a carpet cleaning or tile and grout cleaning service to ensure that your floors are as clean as possible. Leave a couple of days between closing and moving day so you can arrange to have these services performed while your new house is empty.
Hire a Pest Control Company
Just like it is easier to clean floors when the house is empty, it is also easier to do an initial pest control treatment. Hire a reputable pest control company to come in your home and spray while all the rooms, closets, drawers, and cabinets are empty.
